Medical Education in China.

The Hong Kong, School was founded in 1887 by Sir Patrick Manson, Sir James Cantlie, and others, under the auspices of the Colonial

Government.

In 1909, sufficient money for a special building had been raised by subscriptions from Chinese merchants and this suggested to Sir Frederick Lugard the larger idea of a University. More money was obtained and the Medical School having been incorporated as the Faculty of Medicine of the new University, the medical degrees were recognised by the General Medical Council for registration in Great Britain,

Hong Kong thus provided the first medical school in which western medicine was taught to Chinese with a full curriculum. Previous to this,hospitals had been founded by medical missionariesand these were followed by small medical schools

all over China.

In 1914, the Rockefeller Foundation sent a commission to China to review the whole situation and accordingly a China Medical Board was established, and it was resolved that schools should be built in Peking, Shanghai, and Canton,

The Peking school and hospital is now completed and is to be formally opened in September of this year, many distinguished medical men having been invited to attend the opening ceremonies,

Owing to the great cost of the school in Peking, it has been

decided not to build schools in Shanghai and Canton, but to give assistance to schools and hospitals already in existence.
